Digital Interfaces That Stay Out of Your Way
I’m an interface designer, and for the past 16 years I’ve been working to make digital experiences more intuitive, beautiful, user-friendly and more enjoyable to use.
From an everyday user’s perspective, I believe a good interface is one that quietly makes life easier. It helps people get things done with less effort and find their way around without having to think about how the interface itself works.
They might not even notice that the design is good — and that’s exactly the point. People rarely praise an interface when everything works as it should. They only really notice when something goes wrong.
I believe I’m doing my job well when my work goes unnoticed. Much like a football referee, who has done a great job when the game isn’t about them. Their role is essential, but when everything works, they simply disappear into the background.
